A Compact Three-Port DC-DC Converter for Integrated PV-Battery System

Abstract: In this paper, a new non-isolated three-port DC-DC converter (NITPC) to integrate a battery storage with a PV module is proposed. The intermittency of renewable energy and the unpredictable load demand are eliminated by firming a backup battery with the PV module to supply extra power when it is required. The proposed converter is reconfigurable and able to operate as a conventional boost converter, a buck-boost converter or a forward converter in different modes to support several power flow combinations and … Show more

“…Several three‐port dc‐dc converters (TPC) have been reported in the literature to integrate the RES and battery with LVDDS. Non‐isolated TPCs are cost‐effective for low voltage applications because of their compact size and the low number of components counts 15–27 . However, non‐isolated TPCs have restricted power flow options due to the sharing of the components under different modes of operation.…”

“…Power flow restrictions can be overcome by using more switches which increases the complexity of the control. Also, most of the topologies reviewed and proposed are focused on loads that do not have the current reversibility feature 15–20,27 . Thus, loads with current reversibility or bidirectional features such as battery and LVDDS grid cannot be integrated using such TPCs.…”

“…Various three-port converter topologies have already been presented and analyzed in the literature [5][6][7][8], which show remarkable efficiencies under suitable operating conditions [9]. Unfortunately, due to the required galvanic isolation between the AC mains and the two DC voltage buses, promising non-isolated topologies cannot be used in the application at hand [10,11], which is why only topologies remain that use a transformer for isolation purposes. However, these isolated topologies feature a common characteristic: they are often built symmetrically, which means that every converter port shows the same circuit structure [12].…”
