Small-scale fisheries are learning contexts of importance for generating, transferring, and updating ecological knowledge of natural environments through everyday work practices. The rich knowledge fishers have of local ecosystems is the result of the intimate relationship fishing communities have had with their natural environments across generations (see e.g. Urquhart and Acott 2013). This relationship develops strong emotional bonds to the physical and social place. For fishing communities and fisherswho depend directly on local ecosystems to maintain their livelihoodsfishing environments are natural places for living, working and defining themselves. Previous research on fishers' ecological knowledge has mainly been descriptive, i.e., has focused on aspects such as reproduction, nutrition and spatial-temporal distribution and population dynamics, from a traditional view of knowledge that only recognises scientific knowledge as the true knowledge. By doing this, fishers' ecological knowledge has been investigated separately from the learning contexts in which it is generated, ignoring the influence of social, cultural and historical aspects that characterise fishing communities, and the complex relationships between fishers and the natural environments they live and work in. This thesis investigates ecological knowledge among small-scale fishers living and working in the ecosystems of Lake Vättern and the Blekinge Archipelago (Baltic Sea) in Sweden and explores how ecological knowledge is generated with particular regard to the influences of work and nature on fishers' knowledge of ecosystems. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the knowledge and understanding of informal learning processes of ecosystem complexity among small-scale fishers. This knowledge further contributes to the research field of ecological knowledge and sustainable use and management of natural resources. It addresses the particular research questions of what ecological knowledge fishers generate, and how its generation is influenced by their fishing work practices and relationships to nature.The thesis consists of three articles. Article I focuses on the need to address the significant lack of theoretical and methodological frameworks for the investigation of the cognitive aspects involved in the generation of ecological knowledge. Article II deals with the need to develop theoretical, methodological and empirical frameworks that avoid romanticising and idealising users' ecological knowledge in local (LEK), indigenous (IEK) and traditional (TEK) ecological knowledge research, by rethinking it as being generated through work practices. Article III addresses the lack of studies that explicitly explore theories linking complex relations and knowledge that humans form within and of ecosystems. RESUMEN. Cada operación de pesca en pesquerías multiespecíficas puede ser descrita por medio del análisis de la proporción de especies en la captura, área y arte de pesca. A un conjunto de operaciones de pesca similares, se ha definido en la literatura como táctica de pesca. En este trabajo, se identificaron tácticas de pesca empleadas en la pesquería multiespecfica de crustáceos (PMC), entre 26°03'S y 38°28'S frente a Chile. Se utilizó la proporción de especie en la captura por lance, registrada en bitácoras de pesca por observadores científicos entre 2007 y 2009. Durante este periodo, se registraron 1599 lances con 57 especies recurrentes. Se realizó un análisis de componentes principales para reducir la dimensionalidad de especies y posteriormente, se aplicó un análisis jerárquico de agrupación sobre los componentes retenidos. Se obtuvieron y analizaron cuatro tácticas, la primera orientada a capturar Heterocarpus reedi (camarón nailon) con capturas en un amplio rango latitudinal. La segunda táctica enfocada a Cervimunida johni (langostino amarillo) con lances realizados en un estrecho rango de latitud y menor profundidad. La tercera táctica centró su esfuerzo en Haliporoides diomedeae (gamba de profundidad), siendo los lances realizados a mayor profundidad y la última táctica hacia Pleuroncodes monodon (langostino colorado), enfocados en aguas someras cerca de la costa. En el caso de la PMC, la identificación de tácticas de pesca es importante en la asignación de intencionalidad de captura y la construcción de índices de abundancia derivados de bitácoras de pesca. Los resultados son discutidos en términos de caracterizar las tácticas y como su asignación permitirá obtener índices de abundancia menos sesgados. In multispecies fisheries, each fishing operation can be described by analyzing the catch composition, fishing location, and fishing gear used. Sets of fishing operations with similar characteristics have been usually defined as fishing tactics. The present work defines fishing tactics for the crustacean multispecies fishery (CMF) developed between 26º03'S and 38º28'S off Chile. The catch composition per fishing haul, as recorded by scientific observers in fishing a logbooks from 2007 to 2009, was used. After employing a principal component analysis to reduce the species composition dimension, an agglomerative hierarchical analysis was carried out over the retained components. Fishing capacity management policies have been traditionally implemented at national level with national targets for capacity reduction. More recently, capacity management policies have increasingly targeted specific fisheries. French fisheries spatially vary along the French coastline and are associated to specific regions. Capacity management policies, however, ignore the capital mobility associated with second-hand vessel trade between regions. This is not an issue for national policies but could limit the effectiveness of regional capacity management policies. A gravity model and a random-effect Poisson regression model are used to analyze the determinants and spatial extent of the second-hand market in France. This study is based on panel data from the French Atlantic Ocean between 1992 and 2009. The trade flows between trading partners is found to increase with their sizes and to be spatially concentrated. Despite the low trade flows between regions, a net impact analysis shows that fishing capacity is redistributed by the second-hand market to regions on the Channel and Aquitaine from central regions. National capacity management policies (constructions/destructions) have induced a net decrease in regional fleet capacity with varying magnitude across regions. Unless there is a change of policy instruments or their scale of implementation, the operation of the second-hand market decreases the effectiveness of regional capacity management policies in regions on the Channel and Aquitaine.
