A comparative evaluation of ileo‐rectal anastomosis techniques for the measurement of apparent precaecal digestibilities of folate, niacin and pantothenic acid

Abstract: Introduction  There is a great need for better understanding of the intestinal bioavailability of B‐vitamins and the factors that influence it. In food products, however, nutrient content does not necessarily imply the proportion of nutrient content actually absorbed. Thus a variety of experimental approaches have been used for determining the intestinal bioavailability of food vitamins. They include measuring changes in tissue vitamin levels, urinary vitamin excretion and growth in response to known intakes o… Show more

“…In good agreement to this observation, in a study conducted on pigs treated with ileo-rectal anastomosis and fed wheat, the prececal digestibility of niacin was nearly 50−60%. 27 In aleurone, niacin forms inclusions with proteins, which can influence its bioaccessibility.…”

“…A digestibility trial was carried out with eight males growing castrated pigs (German Landrace × Pietrain) with an average initial live weight of 36 kg. Four animals were provided surgically with an ileo‐rectal‐anastomosis (IRA) in end‐to‐end technique with preserved ileo‐caeco–colic valve (Roth‐Maier et al., 1996, 1998; Wauer et al., 1999). The remaining four pigs were used as parallel partners for the surgically prepared animals, so that each pig with IRA had an intact partner (IN).…”

“…To avoid caeco‐colic tympany a percutaneous plastic canula was implanted as a permanent caecostoma in the left abdominal wall. A detailed description of the surgical procedure, and post‐operative care, has been published elsewhere (Roth‐Maier et al., 1998; Wauer et al., 1999).…”

“…However, the apparent ileal digestibility of niacin in wheat was 61% for growing swine (Wauer et al, 1999), indicating that wheat may be a good source of available niacin for swine. The availability of niacin in cereal grains may also be markedly increased by soaking the cereal grain in a dilute alkali solution similar to the procedure for making the corn tortilla (Kodicek et al, 1959;Chaudhuri and Kodicek, 1960).…”
