A Comparative Investigation of Groundwater Contamination in Typical Dumpsites and Cemetery Using Ert and Physicochemical Analysis of Water in Benin Metropolis, Nigeria

Abstract: This paper investigated the comparative analysis of groundwater contamination in Third Cemetery and Costain Dumpsite in Benin Metropolis, South South of Nigeria, using Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and Physicochemical analysis of water. The implications of land utilization for burial of dead human bodies in the form of cemeteries, many cases associated with coffin and caskets used for interment of remains and the location of refuse dump have received no consideration in Nigeria. Interment of bodies i… Show more

“…However, the reports of (28,24) The THBC, TCC and FC obtained from this work ranged from: 5.0 ×10 7 -1.35×10 8 CFU/ml; 3.55×10 5 -1.04×10 6 CFU/ml and 2.10×10 5 -6.90 ×10 5 CFU/ml, respectively. This count is higher than the one documented by other researchers where isolation of Enterobacteriaceae was reported from well water situated around Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, Nigeria (popularly known for cocoa plantation) ranged from 2.79×10 8 -9.66×10 8 CFU/ml (29,31).…”

“…The situation has deteriorated in most Nigerian towns due to the government's budget or commitment to the cemetery business, with cemeteries needing more critical facilities such as workplaces, water, fumigation equipment, houses of worship or meditation, gardening tools, and so on. According to [27], some graves are so situated near residential areas that the potential for subsurface water contamination is highly significant.…”
