A Comparative Study of a Group of Eight Calves, Surviving Longer than 1 Month with the Total Artificial Heart

Abstract: Over the last 2 1/2 years, eight calves with implanted total artificial hearts (from experimental group IV) have survived for greater than 1 month. In this group two subgroups were further differentiated, subgroup IVa, including three calves surviving 31, 35, and 75 days, and subgroup IVb, with five calves surviving 104, 142, 150, and 155 days and one calf still surviving greater than 160 days. Mean survival in the fourth group was greater than 106.5 days. The artificial ventricles used were the TNS-BRNO-II ma… Show more

“…Overall, the most frequently reported cause of death in chronic animal trials is mechanical failure of the device. Examples of mechanical failure that occurred in chronic animal trials include an electrical short circuit caused by fluid entering the electronics, dislocation of TET coils, obstruction of the inflow or outflow grafts of the TAH, membrane ruptures, air leakage in pneumatic devices, failure of the implantable battery and a defect or lock in pump bearings 26,69,83,93,98,114,116,117,118,119 . The second-and third-most frequently reported reasons of death are thromboembolic complications and respiratory failure, respectively.…”

“…a The trial on the Carmat TAH is currently enrolling patients 56 ; a total of 24 patients received the Carmat TAH (as of February 2022), of which data from only 11 patients are described in the literature; the mean duration of support, bridge to transplantation, death during TAH support and most reported causes of death are based on data from these 11 patients. b SynCardia TAHs have been implanted in over 1,700 patients, of which only a fraction has been reported in the literature; we used data from eight clinical trials describing 574 patients implanted with a SynCardia TAH to calculate the mean duration of support, bridge to transplantation, death during TAH support and most reported causes of death 116,117,118,119,120,121,122,123 .…”
