A comparative study of ceruminolytic agents

Abstract: A prospective study was done to access the efficacy of ceruminolytic agents, i.e 2% paradichlorobenzene, 10% sodium bicarbonate, 2.5% acetic acid and normal saline. All score 4 hard impacted ear wax cases in the adult population (>20 years) were accrued for the assessment of the relative efficacy. Upon analyzing the comparative efficacy of four ceruminolytic agents, by taking into consideration three parameters (post) ceruminolytic cerumen score, attempts of syringing required to extrude the cerumen mass, post… Show more

“…In a comparative study2% paradichlorobenzene emerged as the most superior ceruminolytic, closely followed by 10% sodium bicarbonate. 2.5% acetic acid was found to be moderately while normal saline emerged as the least effective ceruminolytic agent [25]. Cerumol application in this study was the commonest ceruminolytic agent prescribed by general practitioner to their patient.…”

“…This has been attributed to the larger and coarser hairs in the external auditory canal of males. However many studies [8,9,10] did not find any significant difference in the sex incidence of cerumen impaction.…”

“…Six hundred and thirteen articles were retrieved using the search strategy of which finally 26 17‐42 were included in the systematic review and 25 in the meta‐analysis (Figure 1) encompassing 3419 patients in total. One study could not be included in the meta‐analysis as the authors did not provide the exact numbers of patients with complete wax clearance after intervention.…”
