A Comparative Study of Phenolic Antioxidant Activity and Flavonoid Biosynthesis‐Related Gene Expression Between Summer and Winter Strawberry Cultivars

Abstract: Strawberry (Fragaria ananassa Duch.) possesses good antioxidant properties. Phenolic compounds in strawberries, such as anthocyanins and ellagic acid, mainly act as antioxidants. This study aimed to compare the phenolic content and expression patterns of genes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis between summer and winter strawberry cultivars affected by seasonal variation, degree of ripeness, and genotype. Antioxidant activity and the total content of phenols and flavonoids decreased with fruit ripening. Most n… Show more

“…Human health benefits derived from eating strawberry fruits include heart protection, reduced blood pressure, as well as anticancer and anti-inflammatory activities ( Liu et al, 2000 ; Joseph et al, 2014 ). These effects are related to the high content of phenolic compounds, vitamin C, anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins (cyanidin and pelargonidin derivatives) and other antioxidants, which contrast oxidative stress and retard cellular aging ( Hanhineva et al, 2011 ; Giampieri et al, 2012 ; Joseph et al, 2014 ; Park et al, 2017 ). Anthocyanins represent the main flavonoid class in strawberry fruits that play an active role in the determination of the red pigmentation and in the evaluation of fruit ripeness ( da Silva et al, 2007 ).…”

“…The difference in varieties between summer and winter can be a factor that affects RS activity (Bunning et al, 2010;Howard et al, 2002;Park et al, 2017). RS activity was compared using two varieties in summer in Hokota city, Ibaraki Prefecture.…”

“…If no electrons are leaked from the formation of ROS from ETS, the body will weaken its need for antioxidants. Therefore, the decreased regulation of antioxidant activity during quiet time in exercise-trained people may be due to the more smooth ETS function (25). The effects of plant and fruit extracts on gene expression have been investigated in many studies (26)(27)(28)(29)(30)(31)(32).…”
