A comparative study of single incision versus conventional laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair

Abstract: Our results have shown that in experienced hands, SIL is feasible and as safe as CL. Further randomized trials should be performed to evaluate the clinical application of single incision TEP and TAPP.

“…Some reports showed comparable postoperative pain, and other reports didn't mention about pain between two groups. 1,5,6,10 In our study and some other researchers described that patients suffered more pain on immediate postoperative day. 1,3 In our SUTI-TEP experience of using many different kinds of SILS port including home-made glove port, it seemed that patients suffered more immediate postoperative pain after SILS than after conventional multi-port surgery (data not shown).…”

“…4 The safety and feasibility outcome results from a current study, which is designed to compare SUTI-TEP and C-TEP procedures, have shown no differences in length of hospital stay, POD 7 th pain VAS score, postoperative complications, and chronic pain just like as demonstrated by other papers. 5,6 No recurrence was noted during follow up (5~36 months) in both groups.…”

“…[910] The most important advantage of SILS has been reported as the improvement in cosmetic results. [11] Pain scores vary from lower to higher scores when compared to conventional laparoscopy. One of the important results of this study is that the SILS-TAPP is associated with high PSH rate when compared with TAPP.…”

“…This trend has led to trials of single incision techniques for both the transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) and totally extraperitoneal (TEP) approaches [2,[4][5][6][7]. However, single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) has met with some resistance because of limitations including the difficult ergonomics of single incision instruments, the reported increase in port-site herniation following SILS, and the relatively steep learning curve [8][9][10]. It may be these challenges that have precluded the widespread adoption of SILS in laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair.…”
