A Comparative Study on the Functional Response ofWolbachia-Infected and Uninfected Forms of the Parasitoid WaspTrichogramma brassicae

Abstract: Trichogramma species (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) are haplo-diploid egg parasitoids that are frequently used as biological control agents against lepidopteran pests. These wasps display two reproductive modes, including arrhenotoky (bisexuality) and thelytoky (unisexuality). Thelytokous forms are often associated with the presence of endosymbiotic Wolbachia bacteria. The use of thelytokous wasps has long been considered as a way to enhance the efficacy of biological control. The present study investigates … Show more

“…In the second step, a nonlinear least square regression was used [Nonlinear (NLIN) procedure with Multivariate Secant or False Position (DUD) method in SAS (2002)] to estimate the functional response parameters of the Holling's disc equation (Williams and Juliano 1985) Then, the obtained parameters were compared [T h and either a (for type II)]. The coefficient of determination was calculated as r 2 = 1 -residual sum of squares/corrected total sum of squares (Allahyari et al 2004;Farrokhi et al 2010).…”

“…It is again noteworthy that the biological control literature uses comparative functional responses to make such comparisons, but with different questions in mind. Thus, while Dick et al (2010) explicitly tested the enemy release hypothesis, a study by Farrokhi et al (2010) on Wolbachia-infected parasitoid wasps essentially did the same, but the context was to test the effects of parasitism on the biocontrol efficacy of a control agent (see also Bayoumy 2011). Jones et al (2011) used functional responses of an invasive stoat to examine the dynamics of this predator and its mammal prey.…”

“…The coefficient of determination was calculated as r 2 = 1 -(residual sum of squares/corrected total sum of squares) (Allahyari et al 2004;Farrokhi et al 2010). An additional 3 × 6 Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to study the possible effects of insecticide, host density, and their interaction on the number of parasitized b. tabaci nymphs by E. mundus.…”
