A comparative study on the effects of systemic manual acupuncture, periauricular electroacupuncture, and digital electroacupuncture to treat tinnitus: A randomized, paralleled, open-labeled exploratory trial

Abstract: BackgroundMany previous studies of electroacupuncture used combined therapy of electroacupuncture and systemic manual acupuncture, so it was uncertain which treatment was effective. This study evaluated and compared the effects of systemic manual acupuncture, periauricular electroacupuncture and distal electroacupuncture for treating patients with tinnitus.MethodsA randomized, parallel, open-labeled exploratory trial was conducted. Subjects aged 20–75 years who had suffered from idiopathic tinnitus for > 2 wee… Show more

“…Four basic acupoints near the ear (TE21, SI19, GB2, and TE17) were adopted in both groups. In the PADA group, 11 more acupoints were added according to the TCM theory and clinical research [13, 15, 26, 34, 35], including scalp acupoints (vestibulocochlear line), acupoints along the meridian, and distant acupoints. The acupoints along the meridian connecting with the ear were GB20 and GB34 (gallbladder meridian) and TE3 and TE5 (san jiao meridian).…”

“…A study in South Korea reported that systemic manual acupuncture showed better effects than periauricular electroacupuncture alone. The systemic manual acupuncture includes periauricular acupoints and distal acupoints in the limbs according to the meridian system theory [34]. Similarly, Rogha et al selected acupoints for tinnitus treatment according to the diagnostic pattern of TCM, plus four basic acupoints in the periauricular region (TE17, GB2, SI19, and TE21), in which patients with tinnitus had a better response to acupuncture treatment in that study [13].…”

“…In previous studies applying TENS for tinnitus, electrodes were attached at the TMJ, earflaps, tragus, and C2 dermatome; the results indicate response rates from 17.9 to 82% [ 8 , 15 , 20 , 31 – 33 ]. The electrical stimulation of the C2 dermatome is known to control the excitement and inhibition of the dorsal cochlear nucleus through targeting cells in the dorsal column nucleus [ 27 ].…”

“…In our previous study on tinnitus, the manual acupuncture group and distal electroacupuncture group showed a significant effect on VAS uncomfortable compared with the periauricular electroacupuncture group without systemic manual acupuncture [ 33 ], possibly due to the systemic acupuncture effect of the meridian system, such as the modulation of the autonomic nervous system and balancing of body and mind. In this study, to clarify the effect of TENS, MA, and EA on the autonomic nervous system, we will examine the skin conductance and HRV.…”
