A comparative study on the fatigue life of the vehicle body spot welds using different numerical techniques: Inertia relief and Modal dynamic analyses

Abstract: Owing to the expensive and time-consuming nature of durability experiments, finite element based durability analysis is quite prevalent in the automotive industry. Numerical fatigue life analyses are typically divided into two different categories, the quasi-static methods which are faster and the dynamic methods which are more accurate. The aim of this paper is to compare the inertia relief and modal dynamic approaches in terms of formulation, accuracy and computation time. The chosen case study is the fatigu… Show more

“…A crack's "lifecycle", which culminates in fatigue failure of a cyclically loaded component, is divided into five stages: crack initiation, microstructurally short crack propagation, mechanically/physically short crack propagation, protracted crack propagation, and final structure fracture [122]. Since most industrial parts are under the effect of dynamic and repeating loads, the occurrence of fatigue phenomenon in the industry is inevitable [123][124][125][126][127][128]. In this regard, large industries such as petrochemical and power plants are not excluded.…”

“…Displacement During Spot Welding Process One of the newest methods that were provided in recent years is using an electrode displacement diagram during the welding process to study the shunting phenomenon [3]. In this regard, shunting can be investigated using the comparison technique for three statistical characteristics, In this figure, the blue dotted line displays the electrode head displacement during the RSW process at the first spot weld.…”

“…For example, we can mention the widespread use of this welding method for connecting thin metal sheets in the automotive industry. In this regard, approximately 3000 to 5000 resistance spot welding joints are required to produce a passenger car [1][2][3]. In general, resistance spot welding is used to connect two metal sheets.…”
