A Comparison about European Environmental Sustainability Rating Systems

Abstract: With the arising of environmental problems from the construction sector, the sustainability issues gained more space, making sustainability assessment tools emerge. These tools are based on the global definition of sustainability that meets Environmental, Economic, and Social criteria, and each system has a different and peculiar methodology. This paper aims to analyse the structure adopted by these European sustainability assessment systems: BREAM UK, DGBN (Germany), ITACA (Italy), LiderA (Portugal), and HQE … Show more

Also, it presents a complex system, which may lead to the displacement of space for more direct tools, particularly in Europe, where intense competition is prevalent [98]. Another weakness is the associated cost, as achieving BREEAM certification often necessitates additional expenses in design, construction, and certification fees [99].…”

“…Another effort is the development of regulations, which are being created and updated in both developed and developing nations to obtain optimum energy savings in buildings. Building certification is a key technique for making these laws and regulations effective [25], such as LEED, BREEAM, VERDE, and LiderA [26]. In Brazil, the MPOG Normative Instruction of 19 January 2010 established environmental sustainability criteria in the acquisition of goods, contracting of services, or works by the Federal Public Administration [27]; and, later, Decree No.…”
