A comparison between three psychogeriatric rating scales

Abstract: SUMMARYThis study compares a new psychogeriatric rating scale, the Organic Brain Syndrome (OBS) scale, which is a combined observation and interview scale, with two other scales. Twenty-eight elderly demented patients took part in the study. The OBS scale was compared to the Gottfries, BrPne and Steen (GBS) scale, the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) scale and a global rating. The correlations between OBS, GBS and MMSE were high, showing that the concurrent validity is good. The ratings of the OBS scale we… Show more

“…33,34 The MMSE is a clinically and scientifically accepted instrument with confirmed validity. 27,34 In particular, with repeated MMSE assessments, the diagnostic precision for detection of cognitive fluctuations increases, especially when patients can be assessed in the preoperative period. 35 The OBS Scale was used to detect delirium and to categorize delirium subtypes.…”

“…The second subscale covers 39 clinical items, including different time-related variations and fluctuations of the clinical state, emotional reactions, suspiciousness, hallucinations, paranoid symptoms and delusion, language and speech disturbances, neurological signs and symptoms, spatial orientation and recognition, and physical and practical ability. 26,27 In comparisons with other delirium assessment scales, the OBS Scale has good concurrent validity and effectiveness. The results also allow subdivision into various psychomotor and psychiatric subtypes of delirium, 1,26,27 which may have importance for treatment of delirium.…”

“…The OBS Scale has also been reported to show good responsiveness to cognitive symptoms in an elderly population [41] but there is no published reference to any psychometric properties of this tool [46]. A comparison between the OBS Scale and the MMSE as applied to patients with dementia was carried out by Jensen et al [47] and the two were found to have good agreement, however, the sample comprised of patients with dementia and the applicability of the OBS Scale in a stroke setting is not described in the literature. The fourth tool reported in this review is the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), a tool which has reported restrictions in the application in stroke due to its score being influenced by language, mood and sensory and motor function [10].…”
