A Comparison of a Smartphone App with Other GPS Tracking Type Devices Employed in Football

Abstract: History: Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of a smartphone application in comparison against current GPS tracking type devices that are used to track players during football training and match play. Football involves repeated multi directional movements of the whole body at varying speeds and varying distances from walking to high speed running. Therefore, to evaluate validity and reliability of smartphones and elite tracker devices both were assessed and compared against each other… Show more

“…To date, there are still very few current studies examining GPS-based measurements in various disciplines [ 6 , 8 , 12 , 13 , 19 ]. Other studies have examined the use of external GPS receivers in combination with mobile apps in team sports [ 38 , 39 , 40 ]. In a further analysis, the majority of the running tests showed overestimation of distance measurement in all devices, with the largest deviations for the Polar Ignite measurements followed by Beat app and the smallest with Garmin 945.…”

“…The players’ positioning was recorded using GPS devices operating at a sampling frequency of 10 Hz and integrated with 400 Hz Tri-Axial accelerometers and Gyroscope (Playertek ® , Catapult Innovations, Dundalk, Ireland) [ 33 ]. Playertek appears to be more precise in speed estimation across different weather conditions [ 34 ].…”

“…The device has recently been shown to produce similar TL data outputs when compared to a previously validated differential MEMS device. 28 The device was worn by the players between the scapula and secured using a custom-made fitted vest supplied by the manufacturer. All data handling and collection procedures were in line with those previously recommended in the literature.…”
