“…Endometrial cytology can be collected by uterine lavage or with a cytobrush. The most reliable method for diagnosing subclinical endometritis is cytobrush cytology (Barlund et al 2008). Endometrial samples are collected with a small brush and the percentage of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) is calculated.…”

“…Uterine samples collected using the cytobrush method [1] and [7] allow easier 66 slide preparation compared with samples collected using low-volume uterine lavage, but still 67 require the time-consuming cell evaluation step. The lack of a practical cow-side test is a major 68 reason endometritis is not monitored or managed in commercial herds.…”

“…The lack of a practical cow-side test is a major 68 reason endometritis is not monitored or managed in commercial herds. The objectives of this study were to: (1) Uterine lavage samples used in this experiment were part of a larger study [4]. The present study 91 was initiated after 10 herds had already been sampled.…”

“…However, most of the cytobrushes used to harvest bovine endometrial cells are designed for human use and required modifications before being used in cattle (Kasimanickam et al, 2005b, Barlund et al, 2008. In this study, we used a device specifically designed for cattle (Cytobrush, Minitube, Australia).…”

“…This is basically due to the lack of agreement about the threshold values of PMN cells and the possible false negatives that can be diagnosed. In subclinical endometritis, the threshold values mentioned in different studies ranged from 5 to 18% (Kasimanickam et al, 2004, Barlund et al, 2008, Barański et al, 2012. These differences in the percentages of PMN between the studies are based on the inflammatory changes in the uterus after parturition showing higher percentage of PMN during first weeks postpartum, decreasing by the time of uterine involution (Barański et al, 2012).…”
