A comparison of efficiency of two photoinitiators for polymerization of light‐cure dental composite resins

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to compare the effect of two photoinitiators, (2)camphorquinone (CQ) and 1-phenyl-1,2-propanedione (PPD) on curing performance of light-cure dental composite resins. Bisphenol Aglycidyl methacrylate (BisGMA)/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) monomer mixture was used as the resin matrix. The resin matrix was mixed with CQ and/or PPD along with 0.25% of 4-(dimethyl amino) phenethyl alcohol (DMAPEA) catalyst. The effect of photoinitiator on curing performance was evaluated an… Show more

“…Freeze-dried swollen hydrogels samples were fixed Figure 1 Key steps of the mechanism of visible light photoinitiation of free radical polymerization by CQ/amine systems. 12 on aluminum disks with a carbon band and were coated with gold by vapor deposition. Brightness and contrast of each SEM photograph were carefully adjusted to the same level, because the pore size detection by images analysis software is based upon the gray-scale of the images.…”

“…Efforts to enhance the quality of the polymer matrix have investigated alternative photosensitizers suitable for dental resins. [7][8][9] 2,2-Dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone (DMPA) is a very efficient and frequently used free radical photoinitiator for thin photocurable coatings ($ 20 lm). 10,11 The colorless nature of DMPA makes it very attractive for the formulation of dental resins with improved esthetical properties.…”

“…The restoration of teeth commonly involves a methacrylate based dental composition that is polymerized in air in the presence of suitable photoinitiating systems (PISs) . The most commonly used PISs are based on a photoinitiator (camphorquinone, CQ) and a co‐initiator (such as ethyldimethylaminobenzoate, EDB) . Other usable compounds include, for example, hydrogen, electron/proton or electron donors, β‐allyl sulfones, cleavable ketones (e.g.…”
