A Comparison of Electronystagmography Results with Posturography Findings from the BalanceTrak 500

Abstract: For many patients with dizziness and/or balance dysfunctions, posturography can provide additional information to that obtained with electronystagmography. This is especially apparent in individuals who have these symptoms but have normal or borderline normal electronystagmography findings.

“…This could mean that, at least in the special pathologic condition of a VS, the LSCC, as part of the peripheral vestibular system, has a greater influence on the posture of the affected individuals than the central vestibular system. Other authors, using different CDPP testing equipment, have previously reported the absence of any correlation among ENG results and posturography findings [9]. This difference from findings in the present study may stem from the fact that they tested individuals with many different vestibular pathologies, used different CDPP equipment (i.e.…”

“…Previous studies have compared computerized dynamic posturography with patient-perceived scores on handicap as well as with other diagnostic modalities such as electronystagmography (ENG), rotational chair, and others (1)(2)(3). There is disagreement in the literature about the strength of correlation, if any, between these tools routinely used to assess the balance-disordered person.…”

“…The effectiveness of the CAPS protocol has been validated by several studies that showed that the CAPS eyes closed on a perturbed surface posturographic test was a sensitive test for identifying patients who have fallen. [47][48][49][50] The CAPS provides several numerical results based on the statistical analysis of the center of pressure. In this study, we used the participant's stability level, which is calculated by comparing the amount of the participant's sway throughout the duration of the test with age-matched norms.…”
