A Comparison of Extremity Thrombosis Rates in Adolescent and Young Adult Versus Younger Pediatric Oncology Patients at a Children's Hospital

Abstract: This study suggests that the risk of extremity deep vein thrombosis is higher in the AYA subset of oncology patients than in the patients who are 14 years or younger. Prospective studies to elucidate the true rate of thrombosis, as well as to study the benefit of prophylactic anticoagulation in the AYA population, should be undertaken.

“…Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a well‐known complication among both adult and pediatric cancer patients, and higher rates of VTE have been reported in the AYAO population in comparison to pediatrics 4–7 . Even though VTE risk factors have been identified in children with cancer, such as age >12 years, having a central venous catheter (CVC) or the use of asparaginase and adults with cancer, such as having pancreatic cancer, being obese or receiving bevacizumab or cisplatin, studies evaluating VTE risk factors for the AYAO population are sparse 8–11 .…”
