A comparison of farming‐ and non‐farming‐related suicides from the United States’ National Violent Deaths Reporting System, 2003–2016

Abstract: Farmers are at higher risk of suicide than other occupations and the general population. The complex suicide risk factors have not been examined in a large, population‐wide study across a significant time period. This observational study draws on existing data from the United States’ National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS), including 140,523 farming‐ or non‐farming‐related suicide decedents between 2003 and 2016 from across 40 states. “Farming‐related” decedents included 2,801 suicides. Farmers had hig… Show more

“…Among the general population in the United States, male farmers and ranchers are over three times more likely to die by suicide than females, despite females being more likely to have a suicide attempt 27,30 . Analyses of segments of the agricultural population have also found males represent a large proportion of identified suicides 20,22,23,31 . The proportion of suicides among males may be due to several factors.…”

“…The NVDRS is commonly used in the research of suicide (Cerel et al, 2015; Kennedy et al, 2021; see Nazarov et al, 2019 for scoping review) and substance use (e.g., substance‐related homicide; Nazarov & Li, 2020) and is also used to investigate the relationship between substance use and suicide. For instance, the NVDRS has been used to examine the association between alcohol use and suicide method (Conner, Bagge, et al, 2014; Conner, Huguet, et al, 2014), substance use and motor vehicle suicide (Sung, 2017), and ethnic/racial differences in the alcohol‐suicide linkage (Caetano et al, 2013).…”

“…In the background are the economic challenges in farming that have existed for decades, creating chronic strain [9][10][11]. Changes in self-concept such as loss of self-esteem and feelings of failure are a source of stress that may lead to depression and are likely to partly explain the high suicide rate in farmers [12][13][14][15][16]. Continual readjustment to sources of stress such as work disruptions can cause chronic exhaustion [6].…”
