A comparison of methods for calculating notch tip strains and stresses under multiaxial loading

Abstract: Selected methods for calculating notch tip strains and stresses in elastic-plastic isotropic bodies subjected to multiaxial monotonic loading were compared. The methods use sets of equations where hypothetical notch tip elastic strains and stresses obtained from FEM calculations serve as an input. The comparison was performed within two separate groups of methods: the first group consists of the methods intended for cases of multiaxial proportional loading and the second group deals with multiaxial non-proport… Show more

“…33 It is worth noting that the accurate extraction of the local stress-strain response at the notch root is the vital step of this method. 20 Until now, three strategies are commonly used to obtain the stress-strain histories at the notch root 34 : the experimental approaches, elasto-plastic FEA, and approximate calculation approaches. Among them, the experimental approaches can present objective and precise stress-strain relationships.…”

“…The H‐S scheme has been recently validated on C–Mn steel for plane stress and plane strain conditions subjected to uniaxial loading 35 . Lutovinov et al 36 compared the notch tip stress/strain using H‐S scheme with elastic–plastic FE results for proportional loading conditions.…”
