A Comparison of Neutral Mg2+-Selective Ionophores in Solvent Polymeric Membranes: Complex Stoichiometry and Lipophilicity

Abstract: Mg 2+ -selective ionophores were intensively investigated in order to obtain Mg 2+ sensors sufficiently selective for the determinations of human specimens. From basic considerations discussed before, 1,2 electrically neutral lipophilic amide derivatives were considered to be attractive candidates for designing magnesium-selective ionophores and sensing layers. A set of amides were synthesized and investigated, whereof the di-and tripodal malondiamides showed attractive features. [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][… Show more

“…Choosing an appropriate plasticizer is essential for the construction of an ion-selective electrode with high analytical performances, such as Nernstian slope, selectivity, fast response, long life, and lower detection limit (Zhang et al 2000). Compatibility with polymer and electrodic component (ionophore), low solubility in aqueous solution, low viscosity, low cost, and low toxicity are the desirable properties of the plasticizers (O ' Rourke et al 2011).…”

“…Electrodes based on membranes B showed high discrimination of Ca 2þ as described earlier [2,11,15,17,24]. The basics were discussed and correlated with experiments for the new malonic diamide ionophores [41]. The lipophilic salt ETH 500 and the high ionic strength of the membrane phase have no significant effect on the selectivity of the electrodes using a plasticizer with relatively high permittivity such as o-NPOE ( r ca.…”

“…Limiting lipophilicities of membrane components were discussed (see [2,42]). The lipophilicity of the ionophores was determined by thin-layer chromatography [43] and is reported in [41]. For ETH T 5504, logP TLC is 8.29 which is higher than that of the most famous and stable K þ -selective ionophore valinomycin.…”

“…In this method, two membrane segments are fused together, with only one containing the ionophore, to give a concentration-polarized sandwich membrane. A membrane potential measurement of this transient condition reveals the ion activity ratio at both interfaces, which translates into the apparent binding constants of the ion-ionophore complex [30]. In this method complex formation constants obtained by neglecting ion pairing.…”
