A Comparison of Production Performance, Egg Quality, and Cecal Microbiota in Laying Hens Receiving Graded Levels of Vitamin B12

Abstract: The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of fortified diets with standard vs. high levels of vitamin B12 on cecal microbiota composition, production performance, and eggshell quality of laying hens. Dietary treatments consisted of a basal diet with no supplementation of vitamin B12 or supplemented with 25, 100, and 400 μg/kg vitamin B12, respectively. A total of 432 laying hens were randomly assigned to four treatments with six replicates per treatment. No significant effect of dietary treatmen… Show more

“…The production performance, egg and shell quality, and vitamin B 12 concentration in the serum of layers fed diets supplemented with different levels of vitamin B 12 have been published in a previous paper 11 . The shell thickness of eggs was significantly improved by supplementing 100 μg kg −1 vitamin B 12 in the diet.…”

“…Vitamin B 12 concentration in the liver and egg yolk of layers The production performance, egg and shell quality, and vitamin B 12 concentration in the serum of layers fed diets supplemented with different levels of vitamin B 12 have been published in a previous paper. 11 The shell thickness of eggs was significantly improved by supplementing 100 μg kg −1 vitamin B 12 in the diet. The vitamin B 12 concentration in the serum of layers was linearly increased with increasing level of supplemental level of vitamin B 12 in the diet.…”

“…As an example, a significant increase in the abundance of cecal Faecalibacterium and a lower abundance of Acinetobacter were reported in hens receiving 100 or 400 µg/kg of vitamin B12. Moreover, 400 µg/kg of vitamin B12 in diet could give rise to higher abundance of Butyricicoccus and lower abundance of cecal Bilophila compared with the control diet [170].…”
