A COMPARISON OF THE DIRECT PERIPHERAL ACTIONS UPON SYSTEMIC VENOUS PRESSURE OF k‐STROPHANTHOSID, DIGOXIN AND OUABAIN

Abstract: IN a previous paper [Tyrer, 1952] evidence was presented that therapeutic concentrations of digoxin caused a rise of mean inferior vena caval pressure in sheep whose hearts had been replaced functionally by a double perfusion pump and whose pulmonary and systemic circulations were perfused at constant rates; this was considered unequivocal evidence of the existence of a direct peripheral action of digoxin upon systemic venous pressure. The present studies show the effects of digoxin, k-strophanthosid and ouab… Show more

“…Although previous studies on isolated vascular strips (1-4), on the perfused hind limb of the dog (5,22), and on the total systemic circulation of dogs, sheep, and humans on cardiopulmonary bypass (5,6,8,23) indicate that digitalis glycosides constrict vascular smooth muscle, the conditions under which these experiments were carried out were grossly abnormal, and the relevance of' the data to,intact, unanesthetized, normal man may be questioned. The present.…”

“…14]. In this case, all CTSs, which are also vasotonic (198,283), would be expected to have a similar hypertensinogenic effect. When Hamlyn and his post-doc, Paolo Manunta, infused digoxin and related compounds into rats for 5 weeks, however, the BP did not rise (193,196), even though these compounds, too, are vasotonic (267,283).…”
