A Comparison of the Effects of Different Perspectives in Terms of Reappraisal Subtypes on Affect: Positive Reappraisal and Putting into Perspective

Abstract: Reappraisal has attracted attention as one of the effective emotion regulation strategies. In recent years, it has been suggested that reappraisal has some subtypes. However, the effects of the subtypes on affect have not yet been investigated in detail. In the current study, we focused on "positive reappraisal" and "putting into perspective" as reappraisal subtypes. The purpose of this study was to experimentally investigate the effects of the two subtypes on affect. Participants were 107 undergraduate and gr… Show more

“…Based on the emotion regulation theory of Gross and John (2003) , individuals with more usages of cognition reappraisal tended to experience more positive effect. The studies also supported the positive correlation between cognition reappraisal and positive effect ( Yang and Li, 2014 ; Oikawa et al, 2017 ), while positive effect is a protective factor that can promote individuals’ resilience ( Lord et al, 2015 ). Evidence of experiencing positive effect can mediate the relationship between adolescents’ perceived parenting styles, and resilience can also partially verify our finding ( Nikmanesh et al, 2020 ).…”

“…Despite the suggested importance of emotion regulation as a mechanism impacting nurses’ innovation behaviors, research so far has not provided evidence that supports or disproves the hypothetical role of emotion regulation in translating creativity into innovation among nurses. To fill this gap, in the present study, we investigated the mediating role of a major emotion-regulation strategy, positive reappraisal [ 19 ], in the relationship between nurses’ creative style and innovation behaviors. In addition, we explored the moderating role of another emotion-regulation strategy, putting into perspective [ 19 ], in the relationship between positive reappraisal and innovation behaviors.…”
