A comparison of the Pentax Airway Scope™ with the Airtraq™ in an infant manikin

Abstract: SummaryWe compared the Pentax Airway Scope TM with the Airtraq TM optical laryngoscope in an infant manikin. Twenty-three anaesthetists randomly performed tracheal intubation: at rest, (a) with the Airway Scope and (b) with the Airtraq; and during chest compressions, (c) with the Airway Scope and (d) 7 (9.1-18.1 [6.2-37.4]) s using the Airtraq (p = 0.022). We conclude that both devices provided good quality views of the glottis and successful tracheal intubation in an infant manikin both at rest and during … Show more

“…There are previous studies comparing Airtraq with Storz DCI and Bullard (3), the airway scope (11,12) and the C-MAC and Glidescope (13) devices in manikin-based simulations. However, we did not come across any clinical or manikin-based simulation study comparing the LMA CTrach with the Airtraq and Macintosh laryngoscopes.…”

“…The Pentax Airway ScopeÔ AWS-S200 has been shown to enable faster glottic visualization and tracheal intubation than the AirtraqÔ in an infant manikin study. 2 It seems likely that the role of videolaryngoscopes in the management of the paediatric difficult airway will continue to expand, and as the evidence of their value grows, they may even supersede the flexible fibrescope in some circumstances. Videolaryngoscopy was introduced as an aid for difficult airway management, but its use in routine airway management is expanding.…”

“…The Airtraq ™ (Prodol Meditec, Vizcaya, Spain) disposable optical laryngoscope and the Pentax AWS ® (Pentax Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) are designed for indirect laryngoscopy and have an optical blade with a side‐channel that guides the endotracheal tube toward the glottis. These devices have been compared in an infant manikin study, and they both gave excellent views of the larynx but the Pentax enabled faster intubation . The Bullard Infant Elite Laryngoscope (Gyrus ACMI, Southborough, MA, USA) scope comes with a curved blade, a fiberoptic light source and a stylet for the endotracheal tube.…”
