A comparison of the Ribband Group (southeastern Ireland) to the Manx Group (Isle of Man) and Skiddaw Group (northwestern England)

Abstract: The lithostratigraphy of the Ribband Group of southeastern Ireland is revised through comparison to the equivalent Avalonian margin sequences of the Manx(Isle of Man) and Skiddaw (northern England) Groups. Four tracts are recognized in the Ribband Group, within which fossil age control and the ‘coticule package’ marker horizon are used to constrain lithofacies comparisons. Volcanic arc rocks in the Ribband and Manx Groups contrast with the passive margin provenance of the Skiddaw Group.

“…6; Brenchley & Treagus 1970;McConnell 2000). Age control on the Ribband Group is poor (McConnell et al 1999); a varicosus Biozone age for the Oaklands Formation (Rushton 1996) suggests a correlation with the Prioryland Formation at Bellewstown, in agreement with correlation on lithological grounds (Murphy 1987;Kennan & Murphy 1993). Thus it appears that, in the southern part of Leinster, the sequence equivalent to the Hilltown Formation of Bellewstown is missing below the unconformity, which has been related to a Monian orogenic event to the south (Tietzsch-Tyler 1996).…”

“…1; Murphy 1987;Vaughan & Johnston 1992). The oldest exposed rocks are early Ordovician slates and siltstones with slump breccias and coticules of the Prioryland Formation (Harper & Rast 1964;Murphy 1987 1993; McConnell et al 1999). The Prioryland Formation is overlain, with uncertain contact relations, by the c. 480 m thick Hilltown Formation of early to mid-Ordovician felsic volcanic and finegrained metasedimentary rocks (Harper & Rast 1964;Murphy 1987).…”

“…It has been proposed that the Ribband Group has correlatives along strike to the northeast with at least part of the Manx Group of the Isle of Man and the Skiddaw Group of the Lake District (McConnell et al 1999). In addition, Todd et al (2000) have also recently correlated the Early Ordovician Annascaul Formation of the Dingle Peninsula in southwest Ireland with parts of the Ribband Group, the Manx Group, and more tentatively with possible equivalents in Newfoundland (Kennedy 1979).…”

“…The productive samples here indicated an early Mid-Cambrian to Llanvirn age (Brück and Vanguestaine 2004). McConnell et al (1999) have proposed some tentative but interesting correlations between some of the Ribband Group formations of southeast Ireland and possible equivalents in the Manx Group of the Isle of Man and the Skiddaw Group of the Lake District. While more work is needed, it is clear that the Ribband Group formations seen in the Muggort's Bay inlier have overall lithofacies similarities to some of the Manx Group.…”

“…We consider that the assignment of this succession to the Caradoc Duncannon Group (Tietzsch-Tyler and Sleeman 1994) is erroneous and that the Caradoc graptolite fauna which has been reported from one locality by Dhonau (1970Dhonau ( , 1973 occurs in a small down-faulted block of Duncannon Group sediments, lithologically similar to the Ribband Group, within the dominantly Ribband Group succession. Recently, McConnell et al (1999) have proposed some tentative but interesting correlations between some of the Ribband Group formations of southeast Ireland and possible equivalents in the Manx Group of the Isle of Man and the Skiddaw Group of the Lake District. While more work is needed, it is clear that the Blackhall Formation has overall lithofacies similarities to some of the younger parts of the Manx Group.…”
