“…The relatively high level of genetic diversity in Corsica might therefore suggest that the island has acted as a hotspot of intraspecific biodiversity, e.g. as a refuge during the glaciations as observed in other islands such as Sicily for rodents [128] and parasitic nematodes [129] or in Macaronesia for bryophytes [130]. Further studies of these patterns of low genetic diversity in the mainland are needed to test this hypothesis.…”

“…The monoxenous nature of the life cycle of nematodes may be responsible for this parasitic group dominating the helminth community of wild rats, as parasites with simple and direct life cycles may have more chance to follow the dispersion of their hosts than parasites with indirect life cycles (Bellocq et al , 2003). The longevity of H. diminuta in its normal mammalian host may contribute to the high prevalence of infection of rats, as once established, it can live as long as its host (Read, 1967).…”

“…Twenty vegetation fragments (FF) and various replicates of 100-ha sample areas of recently burned (BA) and control areas (CNB) were considered. Intermediate post-fire areas (INT1 and INT2) were not replicated because of the absence of suitable areas, and this meant their exclusion from the null model analysis for the entire vertebrate community (see Table 4) Sarà & Vitturi, 1996;Goüy de Bellocq et al, 2003). Two or three groups of researchers, each with two or three people, looked contemporaneously for dens, nests and tracks, and recorded seen (or collected dead) individuals of species during diurnal and nocturnal excursions in the FFs, BAs, INTs and CNBs.…”
