A comparison of the structure and localized magnetism in Ce2PdGa12 with the heavy fermion CePdGa6

Abstract: Single crystals of Ce 2 PdGa 12 have been synthesized in Ga flux and characterized by X-ray diffraction. This compound crystallizes in the tetragonal P4=nbm space group, Z ¼ 2 with lattice parameters of a ¼ 6:1040ð2ÞÅ and c ¼ 15:5490ð6ÞÅ. It shows strongly anisotropic magnetism and orders antiferromagnetically at T N $11 K. A field-induced metamagnetic transition to the ferromagnetic state is observed below T N . Structure-property relationships with the related heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CePdGa 6 are discu… Show more

“…However, near H ∼ 3 T, we observe a sudden change in slope associated with a metamagnetic transition that is slightly hysteretic. The metamagnetic transition is consistent with those observed for Ln 2 MGa 12 (Ln = Ce-Nd, M = Pd, Ni, and Cu) and is reminiscent of a spin-flip transition from an antiferromagnetic state at low fields to a spin re-orientation at higher applied fields [5,7,8], i.e. in this case, an abrupt aligning of all the spins along the c-axis.…”

“…Thus the transition metals should be also suitable for fixing of the cubic environment also in the multi-component structures. For the RE 2 Ga 12 T M x compounds it was first find as a substructure of La 2 Ga 12 Ni 1.2 (around z = 0.0 and z = 0.5, figure 2, bottom right) [7] and further for the representatives of Sm 2 Ga 12 Ni type (around z = 0.0) [5,12]. The disorder in the region 0.4 < z < 0.6 seems to be characteristic for the representatives of the Sm 2 Ga 12 Ni type.…”

“…The 4f contribution to the specific heat, C 4f (T), of Ce 2 Ga 12 Pt was obtained by subtracting the phonon contribution, which was estimated from the literature values of the nonmagnetic La 2 Ga 12 Pd [5], yielding…”
