A Comparison of Traffic Flow Performance of Roundabouts and Signalized Intersections: A Case Study in Nigde

Abstract: Background: Intersections affect the safety and capacity of urban traffic. Therefore, the design and selection of the type of intersection need to be made very carefully. According to the demand level, a different intersection can be designed. Signalized intersections are one of the intersection types in which the sequence and duration of the flow at the intersection are provided by the lights. Generally, this type of intersection is used on roads with high traffic volume. Modern roundabout… Show more

“…They alternately direct traffic to stop and proceed at intersections using red and green light signals as per the pre-determined time settings (Dutta and Dan, 2020). The purpose of the traffic signal, therefore, is to assign the right-of-way to road users and thus facilitate safety by ensuring the orderly and predictable movement of all traffic on the roadways (Adeleke et al, 2016;Demir and Demir, 2020;Krishna et al, 2018;Mathur and Mathur, 2018;Sipos et al, 2015).…”

“…They suggested the use of fly-over bridges, the alteration of geometrical features, and the signalization of the roundabouts with road signs and proper pavement markings. Authors in [11] evaluated the performance of nested signalized roundabouts located in Niğde, Turkey, and compared the roundabout intersection solutions with the HCS6 method using the SIDRA Intersection software. The analysis showed that with the application of a modern roundabout, higher performance was observed.…”
