Citrus reticulata Blanco has been widely used to cure some diseases such as cold, cough and indigestion. This study is aimed at determining the antidepressant-like effect of C. reticulata essential oils (CREOs) in reserpine-induced depression mice, as well as its possible mechanisms. The compositions of CREOs are firstly analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), in which d-limonene is the main component. Moreover, the results from the forced swimming and tail suspension tests show that the inhalation of CREOs can significantly improve the depressive behavior of reserpine-induced depressed mice by reducing the weight of the mice and shortening the immobile time. After sniffing CREOs, the number of normal neurons in the hippocampus of reserpine-induced depressed mice is greatly increased. In addition, CREOs significantly increase the expression level of 5-hydroxytryptamine-1A receptors (5HT-1A), glucocorticoid receptors (GR) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the reserpine-treated mice brain tissue. Thus, these results have indicated that CREOs can be potential materials for drug and food development against depression.

The population is currently under threat from a new global health emergency called COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease-2019). The World Health Organization has classified the virus epidemic as a public health emergency of international concern since December 2019, when COVID-19 first surfaced at a seafood market in Wuhan, South China, and spread quickly throughout the world (WHO). In order to inform potential COVID-19 patients about COVID-19 prevention, diagnosis, treatments, and prevention, we have summarized the most recent clinical characteristic data below. We gathered information for this evaluation from a number of research reports, WHO recommendations, and other articles. It is crucial to remind readers that new information on clinical traits, diagnoses, treatment plans, and outcomes for COVID-19 is updated almost hourly. The ailment has affected people to varied degrees all across the world. The patient displays a variety of symptoms, most frequently a fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, exhaustion and malaise. The condition is treated with general care, symptomatic care, antiviral medication, oxygen therapy and the immune system. To limit the potential spread of infection to other patients and medical personnel, it is essential to detect probable cases as soon as feasible and to isolate the suspected cases from the confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Background: Depression is a severe mental disorder that poses a significant threat to both the physical and mental wellbeing of individuals. Currently, there are various methods for treating depression, including traditional Chinese herbal formulations like Chaihu-Shugan-San (CSS), which have shown effective antidepressant effects in both clinical and animal research.Objective: This review aims to provide a comprehensive synthesis of evidence related to CSS, considering both preclinical and clinical studies, to uncover its potential multi-level, multi-pathway, and multi-target mechanisms for treating depression and identify its active ingredients.Methods: A thorough search was conducted in electronic databases, including PubMed, MEDLINE, Web of Science, Google Scholar, CNKI, and Wanfang, using keywords such as “Chaihu Shugan” and “depression” to retrieve relevant literature on CSS and its active ingredients. The review process adhered to the PRISMA guidelines.Results: This review consolidates the mechanisms underlying antidepressant effects of CSS and its active ingredients. It emphasizes its involvement in the regulation of monoaminergic neurotransmitter systems, synaptic plasticity, and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, among other aspects.Conclusion: CSS exerts a pivotal role in treating depression through various pathways, including the monoaminergic neurotransmitter system, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, synaptic plasticity, inflammation, brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels, and the brain-gut axis. This review facilitates a comprehensive understanding of the current state of CSS research, fostering an in-depth exploration of the etiological mechanisms of depression and the potential discovery of novel antidepressant drugs.
