Orthogneisses associated with metavolcanosedimentary successions related to the 1000-920 Ma Cariris Velhos event occur mainly in a ca. 700 km-long sigmoidal-shaped belt that crosscuts the Transversal Zone of the Borborema Province and extends to the fold belts located in its southern or external zone (part of the Riacho do Pontal and Sergipano orogens). Despite its importance, the tectonic setting and the role of those rocks in the geological evolution of the Borborema Province are contentious and not yet well understood. New zircon U-Pb SHRIMP data on an augen-gneiss sill of the Afeição Suite intruding mica-schists mapped as part of the Santa Filomena Complex yielded a Concordia Age of 974 ± 11 Ma, indicating that at least part of the metasedimentary rocks in the internal zone of the Riacho do Pontal Orogen are Tonian or older and possibly related to the Cariris Velhos event. Hf-in-zircon isotope data are presented for the first time for Cariris Velhos-related ortho-derived rocks of the Afeição Suite. Analyzed samples yielded εHf(t) in a narrow range between-1.51 and +2.41, with associated T DMHf of 1.6-1.4 Ga, similar to previously obtained Nd isotope data with εNd(t) =-1.0 to +3.1 and T DMNd of 1.5-1.2 Ga. A possible scenario to explain both the geochemical features and the moderately juvenile to slightly evolved, near-chondritic Hf and Nd isotope signatures is a continental arc setting, where fractionated melts produced in the supra-subduction zone mantle wedge carrying a Tonian juvenile signature became contaminated with discrete amounts of Archean-Paleoproterozoic continental crust during ascent, producing Mesoproterozoic model ages which represent the mixture of those two end-members.

The Alto Moxotó Terrane represents the largest exposure of Paleoproterozoic rocks in the central Borborema Province. Several medium-to high-grade metamorphic units are described in the terrane, however geochronological data are still scarce, and the main periods of crust buildup and recycling are poorly known. In this study, we investigate the nature and age of metagranitic and metamafic-ultramafic rocks in the type area of the Sumé Complex. U-Pb zircon data from a metasyenogranite yields a concordant age of 1.97 Ga, which is in contrast with the previously published age of the complex (c. 640 Ma). In addition, Sm-Nd isotope signature indicates Paleoproterozoic to Mesoarchean sources that coupled with negative εNd(t) values suggest reworking of a preexisting crust. Whole-rock geochemical data indicate that metamafic rocks are similar to those already described in the terrane, corresponding to island-arc tholeiites, whereas the metagranitic rocks share similarities with magmas that were generated in an evolved stage of an orogenic setting. The obtained results are coherent with a long-lived Paleoproterozoic accretionary-collisional event (c. 2.1-1.9 Ga) described in the Borborema Province, which is correlative with Paleoproterozoic (c. 2.2-2.0 Ga) basement inliers/terranes from Pan-African Fold belts..

Two important Proterozoic metasedimentary sequences, the Rio Preto and Santo Onofre Groups, crop out along the northwestern margin of the São Francisco craton and in northern Paramirim corridor, respectively. The Rio Preto Group, involved in the eponymous fold-thrust belt along the northwestern cratonic boundary, comprises the Formosa (garnet schist, quartz-mica schist, quartzite, chlorite-sericite schist and ferriferous quartz schist) and Canabravinha (quartzite, micaceous quartzite, metarhytmite, phylite, schist and metaturbidite) formations. The Santo Onofre Group occurs exclusively in the Paramirim corridor, and is composed of quartzite and minor carbonaceous or Mn-rich phylite. These units record sedimentation in shallow to deep-water marine settings related to rift basins, and were deformed and metamorphosed under greenschist facies conditions during the Brasiliano orogeny. Here we present 427 new detrital zircon U-Pb ages, which constrain the maximum depositional ages of ca. 971 Ma for the Santo Onofre Group, ca. 912 Ma for the Canabravinha Formation, and ca. 965 Ma for the Formosa Formation of the Rio Preto Group. Our data suggests that the Santo Onofre and the Rio Preto Groups accumulated in two distinct basin settings. The latter, composed mostly of sandy rocks, would represent a relatively stable, shallow-marine shelf environment. The Rio Preto Group, with metadiamictite, quartzite, pelitic and rhythmitic rocks, represents a shallow to deep marine environment influenced by gravity flows. Both groups were probably deposited in the Late Tonian, and are potential correlatives of the lower (pre-glacial) units of the Macaú-bas Group of the Araçuaí belt.
