A Component Platform for Experimenting with Autonomic Composition

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a component-oriented framework that can support autonomic computing and in particular bio-inspired approaches. Starting from the Grid Component Model, a component model targeting at Grid computing and already featuring some autonomicity, we show how such a model can be used in a general autonomic computing context. Indeed the model provides hierarchical structure and reconfiguration for both functional and non-functional levels. This should ease the development of self-* and in partic… Show more

“…Indeed, allowing the GCM implementation to reach the expressiveness of the distribution policies described in Sections 4.2.3 and 4.3.4, and thus allowing real program to express simply complex distributions, is still a real challenge. Finally, we also showed the adequacy of the GCM to express autonomic adaptations [2,6]. Thus, we estimate that the GCM greatly improves expressiveness, scalability and adaptivity of grid applications, even if the model and its implementation are still to be improved.…”

“…Autonomic capabilities have often be associated to component models [5]. Among them, the ParaPhrase project [15] is probably the closest to ours.…”

“…Baude, Henrio, and Naoumenko [3] extend the Grid Component Model (GCM) by enabling the composition and dynamic reconfiguration of self-management entities (called controllers) and present an aspect-oriented approach for decoupling autonomic from application concerns. Although a similar mechanism was used when representing self-management behaviour as a component configuration, achieving adaptation by replacing a single Autonomic Manager component constitutes a coarse-grained solution that compromises reusability and cost-effectiveness.…”
