A composite soft bending actuation module with integrated curvature sensing

Abstract: Soft robotics carries the promise of making robots as capable and adaptable as biological creatures, but this will not be possible without the ability to perform self-sensing and control with precision and repeatability. In this paper, we seek to address this need with the development of a new pneumatically-actuated soft bending actuation module with integrated curvature sensing. We designed and fabricated two different versions of this module: One with a commercially available resistive flex sensor and the ot… Show more

“…The chambers are wrapped with a fiber reinforcement, preventing it from increasing in radius when pressure is applied. The center of the link contains an inextensible layer that prevents it from expanding in length [11]. The tiny spheres attached to the rigid plates are markers used for tracking the curvature in the experiments.…”

“…In this work, we aim to develop a real-time, high-fidelity simulation for soft robotic systems. We present a compliant constraint dynamics model for a soft snake robot [11,12,13]. Our model is able to accurately represent the deformations of the snake links while being efficient enough for realtime simulations.…”

“…In a more recent study (Morrow et al 2016), multiple soft strain sensors made of eGaIn were integrated along a SPA structure, but this injecting process can be challenging and lead to entrapped air inside the sensing layer. By using sensors built in an integrated circuit (IC) the sensing accuracy can be increased (Ozel et al 2016), but its rigid parts can compromise the flexibility of the soft-bodied device.…”
