A comprehensive dataset of microbial abundance, dissolved organic carbon, and nitrogen in Tibetan Plateau glaciers

Abstract: Abstract. Glaciers are recognized as a biome dominated by microorganisms and a reservoir of organic carbon and nutrients. Global warming remarkably increases glacier melting rate and runoff volume, which have significant impacts on the carbon and nitrogen cycles in downstream ecosystems. The Tibetan Plateau (TP), dubbed “the water tower of Asia”, owns the largest mountain glacial area at mid- and low-latitudes. However, limited data on the microbial abundance, organic carbon, and nitrogen in TP glaciers are av… Show more

“…Most of the snow metagenomes contained putative PET hydrolase sequences, followed by ice, and cryoconite (Figure 1B). This is consistent with the order of increasing carbon concentration in glacier habitats (Liu et al, 2022a). In addition, the relative abundance of putative PET hydrolases was also the highest in the Alps, followed by the Tibetan Plateau, while their relative abundance was relatively lower in the Antarctic and Arctic glaciers.…”

“…Habacuo (93°27′E, 30°10′N) covers an area of 0.863 km 2 and is a proglacial lake, serving as one of the sources of the Nyang River (Figure 1b). The Basongcuo (29°59′-30°04′N, 93°53′-94°01′E) is a glacier-fed lake located in Gongbo'gyamda county and spans an area of 2021) and Zhang, Ran, et al (2021) and Zhang, Kang, et al (2021) and glacier distribution was obtained from the second glacier inventory dataset of China (Liu et al, 2012).…”

“…There are 1,510 glacier-fed lakes with a total area of 158.97 km 2 (Chen 2021), Zhang, Ran, et al (2021) and Zhang, Kang, et al (2021). Glacier distribution was obtained from the second glacier inventory dataset of China (Liu et al, 2012. According to the global lithological map database (Hartmann & Moosdorf, 2012), the southeastern Tibetan Plateau is primarily composed of mixed sedimentary rocks, metamorphic rocks, acid plutonic rocks, and siliciclastic sedimentary rocks (Figure S1 in Supporting Information S1).…”

“…recorded the highest net radiation, 392.52 W/m 2 , and temperature ranged from −19.3 to 9.4 °C, with an average of −5.5 °C from May to July 2021 (unpublished data). In addition, the high elevation of ME also causes lower pressure than the standard atmospheric pressure (0.0033 MPa at the summit of Mount Everest) [ 13 ] and lower nutrient concentration than normal environments (e.g., in soils) [ 11 , 14 , 15 ]. These extreme environmental parameters challenge all life forms living in ME.…”
