A comprehensive examination of motivational profiles for alcohol-related behaviors among college students.

Abstract: Recent research demonstrates unique relations of types of motivation for drinking responsibly based on self-determination theory and drinking motives with alcohol-related outcomes among college students. In the present study, we sought to extend prior research by using a person-centered approach to simultaneously consider types of motivation within and across these motivational constructs as well as their synergistic relations with alcohol-related outcomes. We used cross-sectional survey data from 2,808 colleg… Show more

“…However, in the LT population, low self‐efficacy is a recently reported risk factor of alcohol relapse. This finding is in line with recent studies that increasingly place more emphasis on motivation and self‐determination in the cessation of self‐damaging behaviours, such as irresponsible drinking and self‐harm (Richards et al, 2022; Robillard et al, 2022). Based on these findings, future interventions should aim to empower patients who have undergone LT for ALD and enhance their self‐efficacy to resist alcohol cravings.…”

“…These nontrivial cross-loadings, which only emerged for the hypothesized introjected regulation items, may reflect the fact that introjected regulation lies in between autonomous motivation and external regulation on the self-determination continuum. Our prior research has found large interfactor correlations between autonomous motivation and introjected regulation (r = .68-.74; Richards, Morera, & Field, 2021;Richards, Pearson, & Field, 2021), and that those high on autonomous motivation are generally also high on introjected regulation (Richards et al, 2020(Richards et al, , 2023. A meta-analysis testing the self-determination continuum across behavioral domains of 486 samples with over 205,000 participants found evidence that introjected regulation is not controlled motivation, but a mix of controlled and autonomous motivation (Howard et al, 2017).…”

“…In the past 30 days, students reported drinking an average of 5.80 days (SD = 5.73), typically consuming 5.05 drinks per occasion (SD = 6.36), and an average of 2.12 (SD = 3.60) binge drinking episodes. Additional details regarding the study methodology and participant characteristics are reported in prior publications (Richards et al, 2022(Richards et al, , 2023.…”
