A Comprehensive Overview and Characterization of Wireless Channels for Networked Robotic and Control Systems

Abstract: The goal of this overview paper is to serve as a reference for researchers that are interested in the realistic modeling of wireless channels for the purpose of analysis and optimization of networked robotic systems. By utilizing the knowledge available in the wireless communication literature, we first summarize a probabilistic framework for the characterization of the underlying multiscale dynamics of a wireless link. We furthermore confirm this framework with our robotic testbed, by making an extensive numb… Show more

“…The wireless channel between the mobile agents and the remote station is generated using our probabilistic channel simulator, which can generate path loss, shadowing and multipath fading with realistic spatial correlations. A detailed description of this channel simulator can be found in [Mostofi et al 2009;Gonzalez-Ruiz et al 2011]. The 3D plot of the channel power over the workspace is shown in Fig.…”

“…Note that we used Rician multipath fading in this example. Therefore, the maximum possible multipath fading power in the dB domain is 26.1 (for ω = 5.1195 dB), which corresponds to the case when Rician distribution becomes a Raleigh distribution [Goldsmith 2005;Gonzalez-Ruiz et al 2011].…”

“…The channel in the workspace is generated with the following real channel parameters from downtown San Francisco [27]: path loss exponent is 4.57, standard deviation of shadowing is 4, decorrelation distance of shadowing is 3.52 m, and the multipath fading is Rician fading with Rician parameter of 5.9. The channel is extended to populate the space of interest using our probabilistic channel simulator [28]. We assume that the robots have 5% a priori channel samples gathered in the same environment.…”

“…There are two key enabling factors that contribute to the success of our experimental setup: 1) use of robotic units, which enables automated positioning for collecting wireless measurements and 2) use of adaptive directional narrow-beam antennas. The latter is crucial in limiting the impact of multipath fading, as we showed in [35]. As can be seen from (3), our mapping framework is based on following the shadowing component.…”
