A comprehensive phenotypic and genomic characterization of Ethiopian sorghum germplasm defines core collection and reveals rich genetic potential in adaptive traits

Abstract: Understanding population genetic structure and diversity of a crop is essential in designing selection strategies in plant breeding. About 2010 Ethiopian sorghum accessions were phenotyped for different traits at multiple locations. A subset of the collection, 1628 accessions, predominantly landraces, some improved varieties, and inbred lines were genotyped by sequencing. Phenotypic data revealed association of important traits with different sorghum growing agro-climatic regions, high genetic diversity and th… Show more

“…Recently, a subset of 387 lines of Ethiopian germplasm was assembled using a comprehensive phenotypic and genomic characterization (Girma et al 2020). First, a subset of 2010 accessions were selected from 9000 total accessions in the Ethiopia sorghum germplasm bank and phenotyped at three locations for six different quantitative traits.…”

“…In short, ML [138,[176][177][178][179] and deep learning approaches [133,170,180,181] promise assisting the conservation [102,[182][183][184], managing [185,186], prioritization [187][188][189], and introgression [190,191] of crop wild variation from genebanks (Figure 2). ML may be particularly useful in unexplored isolated pockets of diversity, which contain allelic variants otherwise eroded from modern genotypes [192,193].…”

“…However, the national average productivity is limited to 26.90 tons ha āˆ’ 1 (CSA, 2021). A very rich genetic diversity is recorded among Ethiopian sorghum landrace collections with unique eco-geographic features that require further studies to utilize its genetic potential (Girma et al, 2020).…”

“…In this study, we used Ethiopian sorghum landraces originally collected from different representative sorghum-growing agro ecological regions of Ethiopia and maintained at Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute. Twenty sorghum genotypes selected out of 358 recently developed Ethiopian sorghum core collection (Girma et al, 2020) were used. These genotypes were selected based on their yield potential and disease reaction observed through eld evaluation at Bako, Jimma and Asosa.…”
