A Comprehensive Review on Chemotaxonomic and Phytochemical Aspects of Homoisoflavonoids, as Rare Flavonoid Derivatives

Abstract: Homoisoflavonoids (3-benzylidene-4-chromanones) are considered as an infrequent flavonoid class, possessing multi-beneficial bioactivities. The present study gives an overview on phytochemical aspects of homoisoflavonoids, including utilized plant species, parts, extracts, and separation techniques. Overall, these compounds have mainly been isolated and identified from bulbs and rhizomes of the plants belonging to Asparagaceae and Fabaceae families, particularly the genera of Ophiopogon, Dracaena, Scilla, Poly… Show more

“…The compounds of 3-(3′,4′-Dihydroxybenzyl)-7-hydroxychroman-4-one and 3-(4'-Hydroxybenzyl)-5,7-dihydroxy-6-methyl-8-methoxychroman-4-one in the ethyl acetate fraction and ethanolic fraction have several hydroxyl groups, so it is classified as a flavonoid with a flavonol skeleton [27]. Another study has isolated methylripariochromene-A from the benzene extract of Eupatorium riparium [7].…”

“…Classification of homoisoflavonoid is based on the structure and divided into five groups: sappanin, scillascillin, brazilin, caesalpin and protosappanin types. 14 The second most abundant compound was Protosappanin E1. This compound has molecular formula of protosappanins E1 and E2 (polymer components of hematoxylin and protosappanin).…”

“…Homoisoflavonoids are a rare class of flavonoids present in few plant families like Fabaceae, Asparagaceae, Portulacaceae, Cucurbitaceae, and Polygonaceae [ 191 ]. Recently, it is reported in Caesalpinia sappan of the Fabaceae family disclosing potential anti-influenza activities.…”
