Two new species of Schoenocaulon from Mexico, S. framei and S. oaxacense, are delimited by analyses of ITS sequence data and characterized by distinct morphology and biogeography. Schoenocaulon framei, a segregate from the polyphyletic S. comatum s.l., is described for the first time; S. oaxacense is elevated to species rank, based on S. caricifolium var. oaxacense, one of two monophyletic varieties comprising polyphyletic S. caricifolium s.l. Schoenocaulon framei is distinguished by unusual sunken stomata on the abaxial leaf surface and ligulate, weakly auriculate tepals, each with a smooth basal nectariferous zone; the basal perigonal gland of S. oaxacense is a glandular depression, and its tepals are ligulate. Both new species also are well-supported cladospecies with ITS sequence data according to the apomorphic species concept. Our results confirm the importance of molecular phylogenetic analyses in decisions relating to species circumscription, especially when such analyses are carefully correlated with morphological markers. The study also demonstrates the ease in applying the major phylogenetic species concepts and suggests that the apomorphic and diagnostic phylogenetic species concepts may result in identical specific circumscriptions.

Antecedentes: La Sierra de los Cardos es una de las principales zonas montañosas de Zacatecas, se encuentra en un enclave de transición entre provincias fisiográficas y cuenta con una amplia heterogeneidad ambiental que la hace sumamente importante en términos biológicos. A pesar de esto, el área no ha sido explorada botánicamente. Preguntas: ¿Cuáles y cuántas familias, géneros y especies de plantas vasculares alberga la Sierra de los Cardos en el municipio de Susticacán? ¿Existen especies bajo categoría de riesgo y endémicas? ¿Cuántas y cuáles? Especies de estudio: Flora vascular Sitio y años de estudio: Sierra de los Cardos, Susticacán, Zacatecas. 2019-2020 Métodos: Se realizó un inventario florístico por el método de cuadrantes. Los ejemplares se determinaron con apoyo de literatura especializada y corroboración con ejemplares de herbario. Resultados: Se identificaron 74 familias, 212 géneros y 341 especies. Las familias Asteraceae (75 especies), Poaceae (38) y Fabaceae (27), y los géneros Muhlenbergia (12 especies), Quercus (10), Ipomoea y Stevia (8) fueron los más ricos en especies. Se identificaron 116 especies endémicas de México, dos en riesgo, seis introducidas y 16 nuevos registros estatales. De acuerdo con el hábito, dominan las hierbas (264 especies), seguidas de los arbustos (55) y árboles (22). Conclusiones: La Sierra de los Cardos en el municipio de Susticacán, presenta una importante riqueza florística que, aunado a los nuevos registros, las especies endémicas y en riesgo, ponen en evidencia la necesidad de incluir el área en estrategias de conservación y continuar las exploraciones botánicas tanto a nivel local como estatal.

Abstract: Seven new taxa of Schoenocaulon and one more of Zigadenus from Mexico are herein described. In addition, a brief description of the Mexican genera of Melanthiaceae and a key to genera and species known from Mexico are given.
