A content analysis of dissemination and implementation science resource initiatives: what types of resources do they offer to advance the field?

Abstract: BackgroundThe recent growth in organized efforts to advance dissemination and implementation (D & I) science suggests a rapidly expanding community focused on the adoption and sustainment of evidence-based practices (EBPs). Although promising for the D & I of EBPs, the proliferation of initiatives is difficult for any one individual to navigate and summarize. Such proliferation may also result in redundant efforts or missed opportunities for participation and advancement. A review of existing D & I science res… Show more

“…It will also be important to develop supports for multidisciplinary implementation-design teams, drawing on the growing science of team science [46]. In the future, our research team plans to investigate UCDfocused team science resources (e.g., mentored development programs) and tools (e.g., shared online workspaces) to complement the limited, but growing, offerings of implementation training initiatives [47] and our UCD strategy glossary for implementation experts [22]. Our efforts will be informed by continued analysis of additional data collected from participants in this study.…”

“…Within implementation science are 2 distinct components that include dissemination research, which is the study of the distribution of evidence‐based medicine to clinical practice or public health audiences, and implementation research, which is the study of strategies used to adopt or integrate evidence‐based medicine into clinical or community settings [2]. An in‐depth discussion of the strategies [3] and resources available are beyond the scope of this report; notably, however, social media are a well‐described resource [4]. Although the field of implementation science is more than a decade old, it is still relatively young and evolving.…”

“…As efforts have emerged to advance IS, resources have been developed seeking to increase awareness of the importance of the field, as well as develop an understanding of the qualities that make an implementation study rigorous and "good" [1,2,6]. The scope of IS is broad, and can be challenging for uninitiated investigators to define, as it encompasses a range of methods both unique to IS as well as derived from other disciplines [1].…”
