The purpose of this study is to examine how Portuguese women jewelry artisan entrepreneurs are empowered using digital technology. Recently, there has been an emphasis on the artisan and craft industry due to renewed interest in handicrafts but limited research exists about how digital and international entrepreneurship has influenced its growth. This study focuses on this gap by stressing the need to take a gender lens on international digital business activity in terms of how it is conducted. In‐depth semistructured interviews with women jewelry makers located in Portugal were conducted to understand how their digital experiences led to increased levels of internationalization. The findings suggest that the use of digital technology was supported by co‐creation, internationalization, and sustainability initiatives. The results of the study highlight the way crisis conditions from the COVID‐19 pandemic led to increased emphasis by artisan entrepreneurs on digital entrepreneurship and this had flow‐on effects leading to higher internationalization rates.

PurposeResearch on women-owned businesses is more extensive in developed countries than in developing countries. This prompted the authors to investigate the factors that affect women entrepreneurs' motives to start a business and the challenges they faced in running their businesses in India.Design/methodology/approachData for the analysis were collected from 620 respondents using a structured questionnaire and in-depth interviews with 20 women entrepreneurs. The data were then analyzed using descriptive and factor analysis in the statistical software “SPSS” (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences).FindingsThe findings showed that the primary motivation for women to launch their own business was to achieve self-employment. Other motivations include increasing income and allowing women to follow their passion. Factor analysis indicates that women entrepreneurs are more motivated by push than pull factors. The research also shows that women encounter challenges in their entrepreneurial journey, such as access to financing, issues with gender equality and social and cultural obligations.Originality/valueThe study on women entrepreneurs in the Indian context is limited. This study responds to a need of better understanding of women motivations and challenges. By studying these constructs, the study shows that start-up motives and challenges faced by female entrepreneurs are unique to different contexts.

Women Entrepreneurs in Algarve: a case study

Purpose: This paper adds to the literature on female entrepreneurship in the Algarve region in Portugal. We obtained data on the profile, motivations and difficulties experienced by female entrepreneurs and studied the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic crisis on their ventures.Design/methodology/approach: The research resorted to a Case Study approach, along with semi-structured interviews with twenty-four women who create and develop their activity in Algarve.Findings: It was concluded that the presence of entrepreneurs in the family, the influence of networking, and knowledge and professional experience were relevant factors for their entrepreneurial initiative and behaviour. The main constraints identified were: insecurity and difficulties in hiring staff. Regarding the motivations of female entrepreneurs, the need for independence and personal fulfilment stand out, reflecting a predominance of entrepreneurial activity based on the identification of opportunities. The negative impact of the pandemic on the business development of the interviewees, although mitigated by digital tools, was felt globally.Originality/value: As the literature review established, despite being a well-known tourist destination internationally, the Algarve region remains overlooked, especially when it comes to the study and analysis of social and economic dynamics. In the same vein, so has the study of female entrepreneurship in the region. The methodology used in this paper allowed for the creation of a survey that provides new empirical information.
