A contribution to the knowledge of the Anostraca fauna of Turkey

Abstract: Our current knowledge on the Anostraca of Turkey is rather limited, due to a lack of both local specialists and field sampling campaigns. Based on the old data available, mainly published in Italian and German, as well as on the results of recent samplings, we have summarized the present situation in order to update the information available for this branchiopod order in the Turkish fauna. Our purpose is to stress the need for extensive exploration of the territory, and to underline the importance of a proper … Show more

“…It is known to occur in Spain (Alonso 1996), western Maghreb (Gauthier 1928a, Thiéry 1991, van den Broeck et al 2015, in the Middle East, Turkey, Ukraine, and from the Balkans to the Pannonian lowland (cf. Daday 1910, Petkvoski 1991, Mura et al 2005, and references therein). The observed "pincers-like" distribution closely resembles that of the anostracan Streptocephalus torvicornis (Waga, 1842) (Dumont et al 1995) and of the calanoid copepod Neolovenula alluaudi (Guerne & Richard, 1890) (Alfonso and Belmonte 2013), thus suggesting a shared post-glacial northward overland dispersal through two separate routes (a western and a eastern one) for these temporary pond-dwelling crustaceans (see Incagnone et al 2015).…”

“…To date, 11 Chirocephalus species are known to occur in Turkey (Mura et al, 2011, present work); to this should be possibly added C. reiseri Marcus, 1913, whose presence in the country is doubtful (Mura et al, 2005), and an unidentified Chirocephalus sp. reported by Mura et al (2011).…”

“…Moreover, from the 21st century onwards, when systematic studies on Turkish large branchiopods increased, a large number of new Chirocephalus Prévost, 1803 species were described (Mura et al, 2005;Brtek & Cottarelli, 2006;Cottarelli et al, 2007Cottarelli et al, , 2010. The speciose genus Chirocephalus is primarily distributed in the temperate Palaearctic, with its greatest diversity in Eurasia (Belk & Brtek, 1995;Brtek & Thiéry, 1995;Brtek & Mura, 2000) and is well represented in Asiatic Turkey, where ten species belonging to the bairdi and diaphanus speciesgroups as defined by Brtek (1995) are currently known (Mura et al, 2011).…”

“…Mura, 1992bMura, , 1995Mura et al, 1997, contributed to the knowledge of Palearctic anostracan biodiversity and taxonomy (e.g. Nagorskaya et al, 1998;Mura, 1999Mura, , 2001Brtek & Mura, 2000;Mura & Azari Takami, 2000;Mura & Nagorskaya, 2005;Mura et al, 2011), with a special focus on the genus Artemia Leach, 1819 (e.g. Mura et al, 1989aMura et al, , 1989bMura, 1990;Mura & Brecciaroli, 2004;Mura et al, , 2006Amat et al, 2007;Gajardo & Mura, 2011), and produced innovative works on the molecular systematics and phylogeography of the group (e.g.…”
