The bandwidth demand of the telecommunication network users are increasing from day to day. Bandwidth demand in our networks will continue to grow rapidly due to the increasing number of technology-intelligent users. Four main expectations from the users are high mobility, large data bandwidth, high quality of service (QoS), and ubiquitous coverage. The emerging optical and wireless access technologies are expected to provide these demands. Optical and wireless access networks have emerged to address two issues: channel capacity sharing fairly to the customers, and adequate capacity assignment according to service requirements. In this paper, the enabling optical and wireless broadband access technologies are presented and compared. The architectures, advantages, disadvantages, and main parameters of these access networks are discussed and reported. The hybrid wireless-optical broadband access technology is presented, which has many advantages to become the next-generation broadband access network. The concept and architecture of the hybrid wireless/optical broadband access technology are reviewed. The hybrid system developed at the Lightwave Communication Research Group (LCRG) is presented as a case study. It comprises of passive optical network in the trunk and a wireless-optical access network. The passive optical network (PON) supports a maximum data rate of 100 Gbps by using the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technique in the optical access network. In the wireless access network, WiMAX IEEE 802.16m provides data rate of 1 Gbps for fixed users and 100 Mbps for mobile users.

Hybrid wireless-optical networks provide the inexpensive broadband bandwidth, vital for modern applications, as well as mobility and, scalability required for an access network. However, in order to provide satisfactory Quality of Service (QoS) on such a non-homogeneous network, innovative designs are required. This paper proposes a novel mechanism to significantly improve the delay guarantee, while maintaining throughput, by predicting the incoming traffic to ONUs. Based on the proposed method, two dynamic bandwidth assignment algorithms are proposed. The performance of the proposed algorithms are evaluated by extensive simulations. The results show that the delay bound of delay-sensitive traffic classes, is decreased by a factor of two, while throughput remains the same.

Modern broadband hybrid optical-wireless access networks have gained the attention of academia and industry due to their strategic advantages (cost-efficiency, huge bandwidth, flexibility, and mobility). At the same time, the proliferation of Software Defined Networking (SDN) enables the efficient reconfiguration of the underlying network components dynamically using SDN controllers. Hence, effective traffic-aware schemes are feasible in dynamically determining suitable configuration parameters for advancing the network performance. To this end, a novel machine learning mechanism is proposed for an SDN-enabled hybrid opticalwireless network. The proposed architecture consists of a 10-gigabit-capable passive optical network (XG-PON) in the network backhaul and multiple Long Term Evolution (LTE) radio access networks in the fronthaul. The proposed mechanism receives traffic-aware knowledge from the SDN controllers and applies an adjustment on the uplink-downlink configuration in the LTE radio communication. This traffic-aware mechanism is capable of determining the most suitable configuration based on the traffic dynamics in the whole hybrid network. The introduced scheme is evaluated in a realistic environment using real traffic traces such as Voice over IP (VoIP), real-time video, and streaming video. According to the obtained numerical results, the proposed mechanism offers significant improvements in the network performance in terms of latency and jitter.
