A Controlled Attractor Network Model of Path Integration in the Rat

Abstract: Cells in several areas of the hippocampal formation show place specific firing patterns, and are thought to form a distributed representation of an animal's current location in an environment. Experimental results suggest that this representation is continually updated even in complete darkness, indicating the presence of a path integration mechanism in the rat. Adopting the Neural Engineering Framework (NEF) presented by Eliasmith and Anderson (2003) we derive a novel attractor network model of path integrati… Show more

“…These results indicate that the integrator will be robust even for small population sizes, because integrator stability is directly related to the MSE (Eliasmith and Anderson, 2003). Similar robustness results for a high-dimensional integrator have been reported by Conklin and Eliasmith (2005), who showed that integration behavior was only mildly affected by the addition of up to ϭ 50% noise.…”

“…For the one-dimensional case, there are only two possible encoders (Ϯ1), so the diagonal center is the size of half of the population. However, this center-surround structure has been observed in higher dimensions (e.g., 25 dimensions) as well (Conklin and Eliasmith, 2005). And this pattern is strikingly similar to the hand-constructed centersurround weight matrices used in past integrator models (Zhang, 1999).…”

“…9), it was quite obvious that the dynamics proposed for localized firing in place cells might take place also in parahippocampal regions 91,151,239 , as alluded to already by Samsonovitch and McNaughton 90 . In the first models proposed after the discovery of grid cells 91,151 , cells were arranged on a matrix according to the phase of the grid.…”

“…As the animal moves through the field, the theta phase of the spikes moves progressively forward also in space, and is in fact more strongly correlated with location than with time 251,252 . This observation suggested to O'Keefe and colleagues that position could be calculated from the interference pattern between the global be more efficient 21,239 . A few years later it became apparent that such low-dimensional architecture exists in the entorhinal cortex.…”
