A coordinate-based meta-analysis of acupuncture for chronic pain: Evidence from fMRI studies

Abstract: BackgroundChronic pain (CP) patients tend to represent aberrant functional brain activity. Acupuncture is an effective clinical treatment for CP, and some fMRI studies were conducted to discover the alternation of brain regions after acupuncture therapy for CP. However, the heterogeneity of neuroimaging studies has prevented researchers from systematically generalizing the central mechanisms of acupuncture in the treatment of CP.MethodsWe searched bibliographic databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, We… Show more

“…Abnormalities in the caudate, thalamus, fusiform gyrus, superior frontal gyrus, and medial prefrontal cortex have been found in patients with CP. These abnormalities have been linked to pain processing, cognitive abnormalities, and emotion regulation functions [59]. Our study further explains how alterations in brain structure and function mediate the relationship between disease course and mood disorders.…”

“…34 The abnormality of ALFF/fALFF is thought to be a candidate biomarker for the prognosis of various pain conditions. 35 More than half of the included fMRI studies in this review selected FC as an indicator of the brain network, measuring neuronal activities based on the specific region of interest of the brain, representing neural communication among brain regions. 36 These analytical methods are sensitive and reliable to be used in investigating the cerebral mechanism of acupuncture-related therapy.…”

“…This makes it an essential tool for assessing the immediate therapeutic effects of acupuncture on patients [88] . Task-based fMRI is an essential approach for investigating the underlying mechanisms of acupuncture, as it can reveal both the immediate and long-lasting effects of acupuncture on the brain [89] and assess the hemodynamic blood oxygen level-dependent effects to assess its therapeutic effects [90] . Recently, significant research has been dedicated to exploring acupuncture treatments.…”
