Contents Urine samples of female goats in pro‐oestrus, oestrus and post‐oestrus phases were analysed for finding oestrus‐specific volatile compounds using gas chromatograph–mass spectrometry (GC‐MS), and proteins using sodium dodecyl sulphate‐polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS‐PAGE) and matrix‐assisted laser desorption–ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (MALDI‐TOF MS). Fourteen urinary volatile were identified covering all three phases among which four compounds, 1‐Tetradecanol, n‐Pentadecanol, 3‐Methylene tridecane and 2‐Ethyl‐1‐dodecene, were unique to oestrus. Also, oestrus urine contained a 25 kDa protein, which was totally absent in pro‐oestrus urine, and less‐expressed in post‐oestrus urine. This protein revealed to be complement C3 fragment. This pilot study, for the first time, reveals the difference in urinary volatile compounds and proteins in the female goat during the different phases of oestrous cycle. The four unique volatile compounds and a 25 kDa protein that appeared as oestrus‐specific in this study warrant further investigation to consider them as urinary biomarkers of oestrus in goats.

Sex hormones play roles in determining musk composition during the early stages of musk secretion by musk deer (<i>Moschus berezovskii</i>)

Musk is a secreted external hormone or information compound that is stored in musk scent glands of the males of species within the family Moschidae, such as Moschus berezovskii. The secretion of musk changes periodically during the courtship and reproduction periods, with the early stage of secretion occurring from May to July, and the maturation stage occurring from August to April of the following year. In this study, we analyzed the dynamic changes in musk components from June to April of the following year. The result showed that musk morphological character, water content, total ion chromatographic pattern, and composition undergo seasonal change. Luminescence immunoassay and radioimmunoassay analyses were performed to determine corresponding fecal hormone levels. The results showed that testosterone, estrogen, and cortisol levels in feces change on a seasonal basis, and are significantly higher in June than in other months (p < 0.01). Correlation analysis showed that the contents of four examined musk components (muscone, cyclopentadecanone, cholesterol, and cholestenol) from June to August were significantly highly negatively correlated with fecal testosterone and estradiol levels (p < 0.01). In contrast, the correlation coefficients were low or not significant from August to April of the following year. These results indicate that testosterone and estradiol may play a major role in determining musk composition during the early stage of musk secretion but not during the course of musk maturation, which suggests that musk secretion may be promoted by increases in sex hormones in June.

The knowledge of reproductive physiology is of paramount importance to guide reproductive management and to make possible future application of assisted reproduction techniques (ARTs) aiming ex situ conservation of wild mammals. Nevertheless, information on the basic reproductive aspects of wild mammals remain scarce, and appropriate management practices have not yet been developed for all the species. This chapter discusses the methods most currently used for reproductive monitoring in wild females. Additionally, the difficulties regarding their use in different species and the possibilities of these procedures in captivity or in free-living mammals are addressed.
