A Correlative Study of Fnac Thyroid With Thyroid Hormone Profile

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Study aims to determine correlation of the cytological pattern of thyroid lesions in addition to the utility and accuracy of FNAC as initial diagnostic method along with thyroid hormone profile (T3, T4 and TSH) which provides information at physiological and pathological levels and thus can enhance the likelihood of early detection of ambiguous thyroid dysfunction with minimal clinical findings. OBJECTIVES: To obtain role of thyroid hormone profile (T3, T4 and TSH) aimed at defining prognostic para… Show more

“…8 Female-to-male ratio of 7.48:1 has been observed in present study similar to other studies. 9,10,11,12 In the present study distribution of neoplastic and nonneoplastic cases were 9.23% and 90.76% respectively, which was similar to studies done by Ritica Choudhary, Zulfikar Ahmed, Umaru N. 13 S. Chandanwale et al 14 and Junu Devil, Naima Aziz. 15 In a study by S. Chandanwale et al, a study of 150 cases from Pune showed colloid nodular goitre to be the commonest lesion constituting 65.3% of the total lesion and thyroiditis was seen in 12.6% of cases, whereas in our study colloid goitre was the commonest seen in 56.68% of cases and increase in incidence in thyroiditis 31.84%.…”

“…Thyroid nodules occur with a prevalence of 4% & majority occurring in the age group between 30 and 60. [7] Most of the swellings are benign and only 10-20% are malignant. [7] So surgery as the initial intervention will have a very low yield.…”

“…FNAC is a simple, cost effective, readily repeated Original Article | Journal of Gandaki Medical College-Nepal minimally invasive and quick to perform procedure. The main purpose is to reduce unnecessary surgery thereby confirming benign lesions 3 . FNAC is however not without limitation; accuracy is lower in suspicious cytology and in follicular neoplasm.…”
