A cortical model for binocular vergence control without explicit calculation of disparity

Abstract: A computational model for the control of horizontal vergence, based on a population of disparity tuned complex cells, is presented. Since the population is able to extract the disparity map only in a limited range, using the map to drive vergence control means to limit its functionality inside this range. The model directly extracts the disparity-vergence response by combining the outputs of the disparity detectors without explicit calculation of the disparity map. The resulting vergence control yields to stab… Show more

“…Despite the stability of the phase difference signal, the drawback of this approach derives from the fact that the disparity information is reliable within a limited range only (Fleet and Jepson 1993). Moreover, the vergence issue is commonly thought as a 1D problem related to the horizontal disparity only, and only few authors have taken into account its 2D nature (Theimer and Mallot 1994;Daniilidis et al 1996;Chumerin et al 2010;Gibaldi et al 2011;Qu and Shi 2011;Gibaldi et al 2012), and the effect of the vertical disparity on the vergence control (Rambold and Miles 2008;Gibaldi et al 2010).…”

Considering a Pan-Tilt head that explores the peripersonal space with saccadic movements, the optical axes are free to move with four degrees of freedom, so a combined horizontal and Since the population of disparity detectors used to derive the control of vergence is tuned to oriented disparity (Chessa et al 2009;Gibaldi et al 2010), we can obtain the proper control for vertical vergence from the same resources used for the horizontal one. From a computational point of view, the weight vector w Liu et al (2008), the desired profile υ v is designed alike the profile for horizontal vergence, but with a smaller working range.…”

“…By considering the neck fixed, and thus focusing on eye movements only, the simulator has been exploited to study a model of vergence control based on a dual-mode paradigm (Gibaldi et al, 2010;Hung et al, 1986). The goal of the vergence control module is to produce the control signals for the eyes to bring and keep the fixation point on the surface of the object of interest without changing the gaze direction.…”

“…Dorsal stream processing ("vision for action"), includes both eye vergence control [17], [18] and gazing and reaching movements [19], [20]. The system constructs a sensorimotor egocentric representation of the space which is based on different sources of information, like binocular visual cues (disparity map), the visual position of target objects (coded by the frontal eye field), signals from the oculomotor system (eye joint position) and signals related to the reaching movements performed by the arm (arm joint position).…”
