A Cost-Effective Relative Humidity Sensor Based on Side Coupling Induction Technology

Abstract: A intensity-modulated optical fiber relative humidity (RH) sensor based on the side coupling induction technology (SCIT) is presented and experimentally demonstrated. The agarose gel and the twisted macro-bend coupling structure are first combined for RH sensing applications. The refractive index (RI) of the agarose gel increases with the increase of the RH and is in linear proportion from 20 to 80%RH. The side coupling power, which changes directly with the RI of the agarose gel, can strip the source noise fr… Show more

“…Due to the high numerical aperture (NA), proper curvature, and secure processing, plastic optical fibers (POFs) have attracted significant attention from researchers and have been widely used in different applications such as gas detection, biomedical, and other fields [1][2][3][4]. The D-shaped [5,6], tapered [7], U-shaped [8], and twisted macro-bend coupling structures [9] have been fabricated and characterized. In the above structures, tapered POFs can strongly enhance the evanescent wave (EW) power in the cladding, increasing environmental sensitivity.…”

“…In addition, as the smooth surface of fibers reduce the adhesion between optical fibers and sensitive materials, some schemes were proposed to improve the fiber structure. The twisted macro-bend coupling structure sensor is complicated and has alignment issues [21]. Multi-group groove-like structure processed by mold [22]- [24] can ensure the consistency of processing, but this processing method does not have the flexibility, and greatly increased the processing cost.…”

“…They provide the retrofitting measures for the variables of interest both before (to assess the retrofitting to be carried out) and after (to evaluate the retrofitting results and obtain the reliability of improvement). In general, measurements of temperature [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ] and relative moisture [ 10 , 11 ] both indoor and outdoor, solar radiation [ 12 , 13 ], envelope thermal transmittance ( U-Value ) [ 14 , 15 ], power consumption by electrical circuits [ 16 ], etc., are required.…”
