A coupled robust control/optimization approach for active-passive hybrid piezoelectric networks

Abstract: Active-passive hybrid piezoelectric networks (APPN) have been shown to be very effective in structural control. However, the issue of system robustness of such configurations has yet to be investigated. To ensure that the APPN concept still performs well under uncertainties, a coupled robust control (µ synthesis)/optimization approach is proposed to determine the active and passive parameters simultaneously with the consideration of system uncertainties. An analysis is performed to gain insight into both passi… Show more

“…It can be seen that the exponential time-decay rate is maximized by updating the value of the resistance. Similar studies have been already published for piezoelectric transducers when an active control is used to enhance the electromechanical coupling constant and subsequently improve significantly the passive piezoelectric shunt damping [30,32,34].…”

“…Therefore, Tsai el al. [34] proposed a methodology to determine the optimal values of the resistor and inductor simultaneously with the control law. Furthermore, the multiple APPN has been also investigated to control of a quadrilateral plate [35] and a ring structure [36].…”

“…With the term hybrid, the authors wish to refer to the simultaneous use, on the same host structure, of both RL and NIC electrical networks. The use of hybrid shunts has been first investigated by Tang and Wang (2001), Tsai and Wang (2002), and Zhao (2010) where the use of the mechanisms was applied to the same patch. The present approach is different in the sense that each patch is shunted with either an RL or an NIC circuit.…”

“…Piezoelectric patches have also been used for broadband control of continuous systems including the use of collocated control pairs [14][15][16] , hybrid passive control [17][18][19] , and self-sensing techniques. The ability of a piezoelectric patch to be both a sensor and actuator concurrently, or sensoriactutor, was developed by Dosch 20 to estimate the strain in the piezoelectric element.…”
